Natural Light and Thermal Comfort in Classrooms
Students spend 30-40% of their waking hours in classrooms. The quality of that environment, the light, the temperature, the acoustics, the seating directly affects their ability to concentrate, participate, and retain information. Research from multiple institutional studies shows that classrooms with good natural daylight produce measurably better student performance than artificially lit classrooms. In the Indian climate context, this means: orienting classrooms to maximise north-facing daylight (indirect, consistent, glare-free), using deep overhangs on east and west facades to reduce direct solar gain, specifying acoustic ceiling tiles or baffles to control reverberation time (critical for lecture comprehension), and investing in high-quality air conditioning systems with adequate airflow per student (a poorly cooled classroom in a hot Indian summer is one of the most frequently cited student complaints in any survey).

Hostel Quality: The 18-Hour-a-Day Environment
For residential students, the hostel is their home for the duration of their program and hostel quality has an outsized impact on the overall student experience. Yet hostel design in Indian universities is often the area of greatest under-investment. Key design principles for high-quality student residences: room sizing that provides adequate space for a bed, study desk, wardrobe and personal space (minimum 10-12 sq m per student for a shared double room); adequate natural light in every room (hostel rooms without windows are depressing and unhealthy); modern, clean bathroom facilities (either private or in small shared clusters, not large communal bathrooms shared by entire floors); fast, reliable Wi-Fi throughout the hostel (this is non-negotiable for contemporary students); a comfortable common room for socialising and recreation; and a secure, well-lit environment that parents feel confident about when sending their children.
Wayfinding: The Invisible Design Element
On a large campus, the ease with which students can navigate from one facility to another is a significant quality-of-life factor. Campuses with poor wayfinding, where new students regularly get lost, where building numbers are logical to the architect but not to the student, where key facilities are hard to find, create daily friction that accumulates into dissatisfaction. Invest in: clear, consistent building identification and directional signage throughout the campus, a campus map at every major intersection, mobile-friendly digital campus maps, and most importantly, a campus layout logic that is intuitive rather than historical (buildings in the order they were constructed).
Inclusive Design: Campus Accessibility for All Students
Beyond legal compliance with the RPWD Act, truly inclusive campus design considers the experience of all students including those with visual or hearing impairments, mobility challenges, and learning differences. Key inclusive design investments: tactile guidance paths connecting the main entry point to all key campus destinations, hearing loop systems in main lecture halls and the library, quiet study zones for students with sensory sensitivities, and gender-inclusive or single-occupancy washroom provisions.
